The eternal now

Live in the eternal now

Being fully in the moment is one of the great secrets of high consciousness living. It’s an attitude of mind which changes how we feel and also changes behaviour.

The present moment is the only moment we have. You cannot think, speak, act or at feel any time but now. The past exists only in your mind, and so does the future. Even tomorrow will only be real when it becomes today.

Thoughts of the past often centre on regret. Thoughts about the future are often dogged with worry. What a waste of mental energy! We can’t necessarily forget the past, but we can change how we perceive it. Nor can we journey into the future (that’s the realm of science fiction).

How easily awareness wanders away from the present

Notice how easily your awareness wanders away from the present moment:

  • How much of the time you find yourself thinking about the past?
  • How much you think about the future?

Wake up to the now! Live each day as well as you can. Have goals and ambitions by all means – but remember you can only work towards them in the present.

If you habitually rush through each moment without being fully there, you miss so much that is good, including the opportunity to connect more deeply with others in the now.

Keep bringing your thoughts back to the now. Pay attention to where you are and what you are doing. This is how you live in the present moment – not too difficult, is it?

Celebrate the moment

You have everything you need to make this your best day ever, so celebrate it. Every moment is a miracle. And remember:

‘The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past as better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.’
